• EAR SURGERY
When our ears are normal in position and shape, they rarely attract attention. Prominent or misshapen ears can be inherited, or may be a result of injury. For individuals whose ears have the characteristics of prominence or unusual shape, corrective ear surgery is now an option. Improvement offered from this procedure can be dramatic, especially since significant psychological implications may be present regardless of whether the patient is a child or an adult.
Dr. Wilensky performs ear surgery to improve the position or shape of the ears. In general, a natural shape can be created, which will redirect attention and bring overall balance to the face. Dr. Wilensky is also able perform ear surgery on patients who desire other ear corrections, such as torn earlobes. During his consultation with you, Dr. Wilensky will discuss your goals and the results you would like to achieve. This patient-surgeon dialogue can aid in determining if ear surgery is an appropriate procedure for you.
A careful physical examination of the ears including measurements to determine the position of the ears relative to the head will be performed. The external structures of the ear will also be evaluated to determine if they should be modified as part of the surgical plan. The surgical technique is highly individualized to the patient, depending upon the specific problem being corrected.
The best candidates for ear surgery are children, women and men who are in good health, desiring a change in the appearance of their ears. Ear surgery can achieve that. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, and typically takes two to three hours. Dr. Wilensky performs ear surgery in his office-based surgical facility or at the hospital, as an outpatient procedure.
