• LIPOSUCTION
Liposuction, or lipoplasty, is a surgical procedure whose goal is the removal of unwanted deposits of fat. The distribution of fat in the individual is determined by many factors, including a patient’s genetics. The best candidates for lipoplasty are those who have specific areas of concern that do not seem to respond to diet or exercise. Despite excellent overall health and fitness, people can have disproportionate contours due to the way the body deposits fat. To that end, liposuction can be performed on many areas of the body, including the abdomen, flanks, thighs, chin and neck areas.
During your consultation, Dr. Wilensky will carefully assess your individual concerns to help determine whether or not liposuction will provide the outcome you are looking for. The best results are obtained in patients whose skin has a good elastic quality to it. This will allow for a smooth recontouring, or redraping, after the procedure. Liposuction can often be used in combination with other procedures, such as abdominoplasty to achieve an optimal effect.
Dr. Wilensky utilizes several types of liposuction to remove excess fatty tissue, employing those methods that are most beneficial to the individual patient circumstance. The tumescent technique utilizes a wetting solution infusion to assist in the removal of the fat by power-assisted suctioning. In addition, some patients may be candidates for the ultrasound-assisted liposuction using the VaserÒ technique, which first liquefies the fat before it is removed.
The best candidates for liposuction are adults who are in good health, close to their ideal body weight, and moderately physically fit. Liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss or an exercise program; however, it can certainly improve the contour of specific areas of concern in those patients who have tried diet and exercise, but have not seen the improvement they had hoped for. Liposuction is able to help them achieve that goal.
Liposuction is performed under general anesthesia. Typically it takes from one to three hours, depending upon the areas of the patient’s body that are being addressed. Dr. Wilensky performs liposuction in his office-based surgical facility. The majority of patients can have this procedure as outpatients, and are able to return home the same day.
